Why did you decide to do photography? And why on your own?

I have always loved photography. When I was growing up I always said one day I would love to have my own photography business. It’s funny though once it was time to make a decision on what to study in college I didn’t choose Photography. I got my BA in Philosophy because I didn’t know at that time what I wanted to do. It wasn’t until I had my children that I decided to pursue my photography dream.

Why on my own?

I guess I have never asked myself that question. I just wanted to have my own voice. My own style and wanted it to all come from me.

Where is your dream place to shoot? Why?

For outdoor photography I don’t have a particular place that is my dream place. But no matter what location I am in I always search for beautiful light and a contrasting background. I love the pop it gives to the picture. For indoor photography I love shooting in my clients homes. I do not bring any props to my sessions. In the beginning I did. But I found that once I stopped bringing props it made me a better photographer. I was missing what was around me by focusing on what I brought rather then seeing what my clients already had. It makes me so much more creative using what my clients have in their home and I feel like it brings so much more meaning and beauty to their pictures because it’s their taste. It's what they love because they chose it for their home and it just makes for a more meaningful image.

Who do you admire?

I admire passionate people. To see people be fearless in their pursuit of whatever their passion is is awe inspiring to me. And it is those people that bring me inspiration.

Describe your style in 3 words.

Pure, Stylish, Classic.

When it was time to choose the name for my business I had a lot of help from my sister who has a degree in marketing. She had me write out a list of adjectives of what I wanted my business to be know for. And that is how Pure Style Photography was born. I wanted my clients to be able to look at a picture or a gallery of pictures and know that Pure Style Photography took the picture. I want my pictures to be “Pure”, meaning not heavily edited or use of filters. “Style”, meaning I want to have a distinct high end look to them. And to speak to the third word Classic, I want my pictures to be timeless and not just a fad. So no matter if you look at my pictures now or 30 years from now they are just beautiful clean, no fuss images.

What’s your go-to K&J product? Why?

My favorite product is the kraft USB pouches. I love them because they are just the right size, they are stylish and they make a great impression on my clients.

What are tricks you use to manage the business and marketing side of your business?

I don't really have any “tricks” other than being myself. I do not do a lot of marketing. I do not do any paid advertising. My main source of advertising is on Facebook and Instagram. My clients are my most value asset. My clients are like family to me. They welcome me into their lives year after year and I love and value that. And fostering those relationships is what is most important to me, and I think that the rest just falls into place. And I feel very blessed for that.

What do you collect?

My favorite quote is “Collect Moments not Things”. It’s how I live my life. I find inspiration in having life experiences. It makes me a better photographer because it makes me see things through a different lens. Every Christmas & Birthday my husband and I give our children a gift of a life experience. They get some small presents but the “big gift” is always an experience. For example, my daughters big gift last Christmas was Taylor Swift tickets. Taylor was my oldest daughters first concert and it will now be my youngest daughters first concert. A gift so much better than anything I could buy them in a store and they will remember it forever.

What is your favorite thing about where you live?

The changing seasons. New England is such a beautiful place to live and it’s a beautiful thing to be able to do so much throughout the year. From swimming in the ocean to skiing in the mountains.

What would people find most surprising about you?

That I did not go to school for photography.

What’s your favorite piece of gear or tech that helps you do your job best?

My Nikon 70-200mm lens. It’s my favorite lens.

What is your favorite physical place to go for inspiration?

I don’t really have a favorite place to go. I often find inspiration in unexpected places. It’s usually through my life experiences that I find my inspiration.

What is your favorite podcast, TV show, or book about creative business?

Chase Jarvis for sure! I love his podcasts.

Who is your favorite influencer, blogger, author? Why?

Randy Pausch. If you haven’t read The Last Lecture you should. I have read it many times and it’s very empowering. I give that book as gifts to anyone that is pursuing their passion. It’s powerful.

What is your favorite thing about your everyday?

My children.
